Expecting

12" x 12" oil, Expecting
Gamblin collects the paint collected in its air filtration system every year to make that year's vintage of a color they call "Torrit Grey." They distribute it to their retailers to make available free to those who ask for it. Then they hold a competition for paintings painted with Torrit Grey, white and black oil paints. The deadline is August 15 this year. I found out about it from a viewer on my broadcast... I think it was Bill Brauker... and promptly went down to Herweck's and picked up a tube. Shortly after that a wonderful photographer, Patrick Lane, and his wife Stephanie wandered into the gallery. It didn't take me long to beg for reference material after he showed me some of his images on the internet. A few days later, in my email, I got the most wonderful image of Stephanie in full-blown, glorious pregnancy.
Last night I painted this during an impromptu broadcast. What fun! Patrick and Stephanie joined the conversation and made the two hours fly by.
I only needed Torrit Grey and white to paint this. It makes me want to do more like it! Folks can enter three images for the competition, so maybe I'll give it another go if I can find worthy images as reference.

I enjoy watching you paint this last night. You made it look so easy...!! Too bad it's not!! LOL

Beautiful painting of a beautiful mom-to-be.

Thanks, Marian. I'm glad you were able to come by and hang out with the gang last night. It was a particularly fun session for me. Images like the photo of Patrick's make painting much easier than others, I have to say. It's all in the lighting, isn't it?

I watched last night after the live version - Susan, you make it look so easy. Every contour and shadow is great, natural and not overdone. Just wonderful!

Hi Susan,
Great to watch the recording as I always seem to be out when you paint, it's nice to be able to watch at ones leisure. The picture quality has improved too.
Yes you do make it look easy and the resulting painting is beautiful and poignant.

Beautiful painting, great video! Actually, Gamblin makes the Torrit grey from the pigment dust that is trapped in their filter system (to protect workers from the dust). I've always wanted to try some but never was able to get my hands on one of the free tubes.

Thank you, Kathryn, for correcting me concerning the origins of Torrit Grey. I was going by what I'd heard, but you're right. Thank you for your compliments.

Thank you Regina, Barbara P., Diana, Barbara M. and David! I guess I should paint more nudes. Or maybe it's figures? The recording on Ustream has been watched much more often already than some of the other videos. Plus, it was fun as heck. I'd be happy with that direction.... Just need images. So, get out your cameras, give them to your significant others, and strike some poses! Attach and Send.

Hi, Susan, FYI, I just visited Patrick's website and love his work, sent a link to my photographer son, too. And your painting of his wife is so well-done; I guess it's true what all our art teachers keep telling us, those value studies are VERY important!

Really like the fluid feeling of this painting; it's quite lovely...and thanks for the tips on the free paint! After visiting Oregon I can see why Gamblin produces such nice greys...and it's great for value studies too. Can't wait to hear about/see your trip to Ireland. Have a great time!

This is quite a departure from your usual work. I don't blame you for wanting to paint more like it. It is simply lovely. WELL DONE!

What wonderful work on this. I'm sorry I missed it, while you were painting.

So glad I could make you aware of the project.

What a picture of beauty! I watched you paint this on Ustream and was amazed at how quickly you laid all the values in. The finished painting is stunning.

Just stumbled upon your blog. "Expecting" is a very nice painting of Stephanie. It's always fun when there is a story that goes with a work of art. Your explanation of the reference photo and the torrit gray competition were interesting background about the painting.
